Metabolix Premium Biopellets

Metabolix Premium Biopellets are made in the USA from biologically degradable polymers best used in a media reactor. The pellets allow aerobic bacteria to grow, which will consume nitrate and phosphate simultaneously. After about 2-4 weeks, nitrate and phosphate levels should start decreasing.

For larger or heavily stocked aquariums, increase the amount of Bio Pellets accordingly. Since bacteria consume these pellets, extra should be added to keep the media volume stable. Usually, this is needed every 3-6 months to replace the digested pellets.

We recommend positioning the pellet reactor outlet before a protein skimmer pump. Since bacteria are effectively removed through protein skimming, this bacterial biomass acts as a good nutrient export method. Avoid using the pellets without adequate water flow, as this can cause low oxygen and pH levels, particularly at night. Ensuring proper water movement helps keep the pellets gently tumbling inside the reactor.

Aquaria with high levels of phosphate or nitrate may experience a short period of temporary water cloudiness.  This is a bacterial bloom, usually harmless, and typically resolves within a few days.
